Idaho’s Soldier Mountains

A scenic range rising sharply above the Camas Prairie near Fairfield, with Smoky Dome as its highpoint, broad open slopes, local peak names and a mix of hiking routes that range from obvious to surprisingly obscure.

The Soldier Mountains are located in south-central Idaho. They stretch about 25 miles east-west from roughly Couch Summit north of Fairfield to the South Fork of the Boise River near Featherville. The highpoint of the range is Smoky Dome at 10,095 feet. Iron Mountain is the next highest named peak in the range and has a fire lookout on its summit.

The range is not especially rugged overall, although it does have a few cliffs on the northern side. What makes it impressive is how abruptly it rises roughly 5,000 feet above the Camas Prairie with very little in the way of foothills.

From the grassy prairie, nearly every peak in the range is visible. Late spring and early summer are particularly scenic, when the prairie and lower elevations are bright green while large snowdrifts still cling to the upper peaks. The wetlands of the Camas Prairie also support an assortment of wildflowers, especially the camas lilies that bloom around Memorial Day near Centennial Marsh and Hill City.

The names used on this page are generally the names used by locals in the Fairfield area. Smoky Dome is the official name for the range highpoint, although locals commonly refer to it as Fourth Peak or Soldier Mountain.

There are a few trails in the range, but few—except those leaving from the north side along the Boise River— have formal trailheads. Several routes exist on the south side, but finding their starting points can require some effort, and trail conditions vary considerably.
